The Swico Recycling system is a not-for-profit system for taking back used electronic equipment. It is based on an advance recycling contribution (ARC) that is factored into the product price of the devices.
Swico Recycling finances its comprehensive range of services, from collection and logistics to processing, through the ARC. From January 2026, the ARC will be increased for the first time in 10 years, owing to a significant increase in costs for the recycling system. A table of the tariffs for all types of devices is available here.
The advance recycling contribution (ARC) is the cornerstone of the Swico Recycling system. It is factored into the product price and consumers pay it when they buy a device. If you later dispose of this device, you will not incur any additional costs.
The advance recycling contributions are allocated to Swico’s own earmarked funds. These funds are used to finance the following services provided by Swico Recycling and its partner companies:
Swico will increase the advance recycling contribution (ARC) from January 1, 2026. The moderate adjustment takes account of developments over the last 10 years and ensures contract certainty until 2030. The ARC was last adjusted in 2015. The reasons for the upcoming increase are as follows:
In 2024, Swico Recycling issued a call for tenders to Swiss recycling companies for the first time in seven years. The new quotes reflect significantly higher costs. These include higher personnel costs – for example, due to the transition by employees in the secondary labor market to permanent employees – investment in modern facilities and new, more complex processing routes, such as for plastics. In addition, sales difficulties for certain materials are putting a strain on overall costs.
Collection and logistics costs have also risen significantly over this seven-year period. In logistics, for example, this is due to higher heavy goods vehicle charges, fuel prices, congestion surcharges and higher container costs. Higher energy and labor costs are having an impact on recycling companies, as are the increasing complexity and miniaturization of devices, the growing fire risk from lithium-ion batteries and a decline in recyclable material yields. Collection points are also facing significant additional costs due to higher labor and energy costs, the increasing number of devices (+1 million per year with the same weight) and the additional work involved in separating devices with and without lithium-ion batteries.
Swico Recycling’s reserves must cover at least 12 months’ expenditure and be sufficient for a maximum of 18 months. Although existing reserves were slightly higher for a time, owing to a positive development in financial investments, they are now being depleted more quickly than before because of the additional costs that were identified in 2024. Overall, the costs to Swico of recycling and processing will increase by 65%, collection costs by 10% and logistics costs by 15%.
With the tariff adjustments in 2026, Swico Recycling is ensuring that the recycling system will continue to be financed sustainably. The significantly higher quotes from partner companies in 2024 meant that an increase in the ARC as of January 1, 2026 would be unavoidable. Dealers will require a lead time of at least six months to make tariff adjustments, which is why the ARC increase was decided and announced in good time. The adjustment will not be fully reflected in Swico Recycling’s revenue until the 2027 financial year: each financial year covers the second half of the previous year and the first half of the current year.
